if i had an idea and proposed it to a company, could they reject me and do it on their own?

i don't have enough money to start my own biz for the idea that i have, so i thought that maybe it would be better to make a proposal and see what they think, but was worried that they might take my idea. what steps will i need to prevent that and how do i go about the process?
