If my friend sends me a gift from the US to Canada, do I have to pay duty?

I'm getting my friend to ship me some shoes not available in Canada, and I was wondering if he, who lives in the US, ships them to me in Canada, will I have to pay some sort of duty even if its considered a gift? May there be tax involved?
